Find a place to park, saunter up the stairs Squeeze another body through the tables and the chairs Love it when the drummer beats it double to the bar Shuffle 'cross the floor, wish upon a star Dancin', baby wanna dance with you Dancin', dancin's all you wanna do Baby wanna dance with you Boogie boogie pattern and boogie boogie steps Boogie boogie gumbo 'bout as hot as it can get Boogie boogie rhythm makes you raise a little Cain Itty-bitty spark turn into a flame Dancin', baby wanna dance with you Dancin', dancin's all you wanna do Baby wanna dance with you Whole lotta water underneath the bridge Dancin' lets you laugh about it all Lettin' down the hair, shakin' out the bones Sure beats starin' at a wall ... Dancin', baby wanna dance with you Dancin', dancin's all you wanna do Baby wanna dance with you Whole lotta water underneath the bridge Dancin' lets you laugh about it all Lettin' down the hair, shakin' out the bones Sure beats starin' at a wall ... Forget about an image and playin' out a part Funky little four-piece and it's pouring out its heart For a single moment at a single point in time You smile for a while and pretend it's goin' fine Dancin', baby wanna dance with you Dancin', dancin's all you wanna do Baby wanna dance with you

Here comes the hangman Here comes the noose Everything gets tighter Everything gets loose I can smell the napalm I can taste the heat Feel the world tremble Through the soles of your feet Janet's daddy loves her With the back of his hand She's had the love All the love she can stand Daddy has been humbled In his war with the booze No way he can win So he makes his baby lose I have the freedom Yes, I can make my own choice I can almost hear The sound of His voice Jesus wants to love you Tender as a lamb If you want it, why don't you take it Take it now while you can ... (because) Here comes the hangman Here comes the noose Everything gets tighter Everything gets loose I can feel the wind I can taste the rain Feel the world tremble As we are born again

Sunset on the mountain bathes them demons red A final benediction on the dying and the dead The rattle of machine guns, moaning in the grass In the hills of El Salvador, time runs out too fast Ride to the border in some old farmer's truck The children must be silent -- kiss each of them for luck Peace, peace, everybody cries Hope, hope, in Magdalena's eyes She has an exclusive downtown address A share in a gallery, all those little trappings of success She puts a little makeup on the tracks behind her knees She knows that the needle is just a symptom of her disease And it doesn't seem worthwhile to keep on keepin' on Just one big hit, one final rush, and she'll be gone Peace, peace, everybody cries Hope, hope, in Magdalena's eyes Other men just took advantage of her private hell Her body was all she had, so that's what she would sell Before dawn, she's in the garden, weeping at His grave He gave new life to her, but Himself He would not save Destitute in sorrow, broken in her pain Through her tears, she hears Him call her name Peace, peace, everybody cries Hope, hope, in Magdalena's eyes

Sixty One 06:43
It was almost two o'clock in the morning When we finally left Beale St. behind us Four old cats had been working the corner since late afternoon And they were still playing blues to a crowd You could smell the river In the deep night all around us You could hear a voice of ancient longing On the wind, singing proud Somewhere just outside of Rolling Fork We slept behind a little, white clapboard church Huddled in the truck, and dreaming While outside, the mosquitoes whined The scent of cotton was planting seeds in our visions And songs of slavery were leaving welts across our minds I want to dive into that river Let it wash away my stains I want to drink some of that crystal water Get me some healing for my pains In the early morning mist Way up ahead, we could see a cattle truck As it went rattling down the road With a load of migrant workers All packed in a blinking in the light Dawn and dusk are the same hazy colour That old highway keeps on rolling south With no earthly end in sight The history of this highway Is the history of man The voice of this river Is the cry of his heart In the dawn the cotton rises Through the mist that laps the road Like the hope of generations That these chains will blow apart ... I want to dive into that river Let it wash away my stains I want to drink some of that crystal water Get me some healing for my pains The boys who sweep the pavement Of the all-night Texaco -- Well, the thought of getting out It just don't ever cross their minds They just swap more lies About girls and cops and cars Lord, we're all praying This muddy water will turn to wine I want to dive into that river Let it wash away my stains I want to drink some of that crystal water Get me some healing for my pains ... I want to dive into that river (Take the plunge) Let it wash away my stains (Wash me clean) I want to drink some of that crystal water (Quench my thirst) Get me some healing for my pains ... Get me some healing ... for my pains

Nightwind cause a rustle In the sleepy dogwood trees After hours station Hangs a blue note on the breeze Settin' on the back porch Distant thunder rumbling low Talkin' to the shamans On the archipelago Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Of the hurricane Up the road, the quiet girl With the blue marks on her face When he don't come home at all She find the strangest hiding place Good old boys down on the keys Sippin' bourbon all alone Out on the shoals it's building It wails to call its own Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Of the hurricane Breeze comes up the levee You lose all track of time Odour of the ozone Done in two or three more lines Funny how it comes to this You know, it starts with just a breath Then it grows into the sting Of everlasting death Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Of the hurricane In the moment that's afforded To the one who truly seeks There's the figure of a man Who calms the storm with words He speaks Above the voodoo of the damned Emerging from the haze A vision of eternal love In mercy, Jesus saves Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Of the hurricane Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Of the hurricane Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Dancin' in the eye Of the hurricane ...

My momma loves me like a momma should But even she said, "Bot, you're no good -- You got to change your wicked heart Son, what you need is a brand new start." (I got ... got to have it ...) I got a baby, she hates my momma She drive me crazy any time she wanna She has me right under her thumb One of these days, I'm gonna buy a gun ... (I got ... got to have it ...) My momma sits alone and prays "Lord, save my baby from his evil ways That mean old devil -- crafty snake -- Wanna see my baby swim the fiery lake." (I got ... got to have it ...) Don't need a doctor, don't need a shrink Don't want a smoke, don't need a drink I need salvation and I need it fast -- Got to have one thing that I know will last (I got ... got to have it ...) I need ...

Somebody tell me please What is goin' on around here? Somebody tell me please What is goin' on around here? Don't want no double-talk Just want someone to make it clear How come the ones who hurt the most Never seem to get just what they need? How come the ones who hurt the most Never seem to get just what they need? You could be dyin' on the street They just stand around to watch you bleed Somebody tell me please What is goin' on around here? Somebody tell me please What is goin' on around here? Don't want no double-talk Just want someone to make it clear Everybody all around Keep on talkin' about love Everybody all around Keep on talkin' about love I wish they'd shut their mouths Please -- show me what it's all about Somebody tell me please What is goin' on around here? Somebody tell me please What is goin' on around here? Don't want no double-talk Just want someone to make it clear ...

Lying in a darkened doorway Midnight in my veins Old ghosts keep on moaning In the alleys of my brain I have tried Everything in my power I have tried This is my darkest hour Let it bleed Sweet forgiveness what I need Got this conscience for hire It all come rushing back so fast My memory shows no mercy Put a contract out on my past I have tried Everything in my power I have tried This is my darkest hour Let it bleed Sweet forgiveness what I need Somewhere on a distant hill His arms stretched out wide In the middle of an ice-cold darkness He gave up the ghost and died I have tried Everything in my power I have tried This is my darkest hour Let it bleed Sweet forgiveness what I need I ain't looking for justice Lord, mercy's what I need I'm standing at the crossroads Can't you help me, please? I have tried Everything in my power I have tried This is my darkest hour Let it bleed Sweet forgiveness what I need ... Let it bleed Sweet forgiveness ... what I need

Boystown 06:12
In the bleak hours of the morning Just before the sun does rise You see the steaming city streets Through different eyes From the shadows, you hear laughter But no one ever smiles Down in Boystown Boystown ... It's a long way down To the bottom, the very bottom Of Boystown A long white limousine Come cruising just like a shark Windows like obsidian Hard, and tight, and dark And you're hoping that this daddy Is tonight's final mark Down in Boystown Boystown ... It's a long way down To the bottom, the very bottom Of Boystown You don't think of the future Because you're never standing still You're just hoping that he offers you A little extra thrill If an infected john don't get A dirty needle will Down in Boystown Boystown ... It's a long way down To the bottom, the very bottom Of Boystown Boystown Boystown ...

Last Call 05:39
She wore his favourite perfume A careful blend of beer and cigarettes So he told her how, one day, he dreamed He’d own himself a ’59 CorvetteShe gave him this look, and said “John -- your dreams are small, microscopic, man And the universe expands every day All my dreams are so damn big, all I can do is bow my head and pray” Teddy behind the bar -- He's got his hair all sticking up like a rooster’s comb He says “Drink up, children, it’s time we all were wandering home." Last call, last call This is your last call Shreds of smoke hung in the air Like a grey and tattered halo above her head Well, John knows that he’s no angel But hey, maybe she'd settle For a middle-aged drunk instead ... Now, all he really wants in life is someone He can finally call his own But the emptiness inside of him is deep and cold Just like ice inside his bones Jack and the band are ripping out the night’s final tune Their minds are in the gutter But their souls are reaching for the moon Last call, last call This is your last call “One more drink is all you get Then I turn out the lights and lock the door!” Teddy's already mopping the floor As the customers all order up one more “John” she said, “I got a place With some furniture and a telephone But since I left my daddy’s house There’s never been a place That I could call home He used to tell me all about Jesus How He died on the cross to set me free ... Well, I wouldn't believe it then, but now I wonder if He still loves me.” Last call, last call This is your last call Last call, last call This is your last call.

Knockin' 07:17
Open the door I want to come in and talk to you I won’t leave unless you tell Me to Ain’t no use Pretending you’re not home I can see you through the window Hunched up by the phone Waiting for a miracle To come ringing down the line A phone call from heaven A long-distance sign And I keep knockin’ Yes, I’m knockin’ I keep knockin’ Knockin’ at the door I see you bear the scars Of a soul at war with itself You’ve packed up your whole life Like a shoe-box on the shelf You keep on asking me why This old world’s so full of pain But I’ve told you a hundred times You got to die to live again – There’s no escaping it You know that it’s true As you sit there in the shadows Darling, what have you got to lose? And I'm knockin’ Yes, I’m knockin’ I keep knockin’ Knockin’ at the door Open the door I want to make you my bride I want to take you for all eternity And keep you by my side I want to wipe away every tear And strike off all your chains I want to drench you with glory And cleanse you with red rain Arise, my dove My fair one come away You've been struggling in poverty This is glory day And I'm knockin’ Yes, I’m knockin’ I keep knockin’ Knockin’ at the door I keep knockin’ Knockin’ I'm knockin’ At the door Of your heart.

I have sometimes felt a sweet and sudden pain Just like sunshine over streets still slick with rain It’s a sadness and a longing, it's a joy I can’t explain But I always know the feeling though it’s never twice the same I have often heard a trumpet far-off sound But then I just wake up still anchored to this ground And crowded all around me is the junk and the trash Of the man that I am now, who’ll be changed in a flash Ain’t it so grand? Lord, I’m comin’ home Ain’t it so grand? I’m comin’ home Lord, ain’t it so grand? A young man won’t believe it, but an old man knows he’ll die And the first thing every child learns when he’s born is how to cry But when those clouds roll back like a great big scroll Then I’ll rise up to meet the Captain of my soul Ain’t it so grand? Lord, I’m comin’ home Ain’t it so grand? I’m comin’ home Lord, ain’t it so grand? A young man won’t believe it, but an old man knows he’ll die And the first thing every child learns when he’s born is how to cry But when those clouds roll back like a great big scroll Then I’ll rise up to meet the Captain of my soul Ain’t it so grand? Lord, I’m comin’ home Ain’t it so grand? I’m comin’ home Lord, ain’t it so grand?

So there I stood, on the banks, dripping wet and listening, with the wind wailing around my head, splitting rocks, tossing splintered trees into the brown foaming river. As the wind began to die, the earth beneath my feet split, a blind and hungry mouth. In the darkness below I could see the host of those lost in their mourning, each of us utterly alone. And, still I heard no voice. Then, fire, blazing out of the east, licking the earth, sending up a boiling black smoke, but consuming nothing. Within me, only a deep silence. Finally, a gentle breeze, a breath in the eye of the storm, and it whispered my name. The sky was torn like the temple veil, top to bottom, and there was a sound like thunder, but the voice I heard in my soul was quiet, almost still ... "You are mine, My very own. You are My child, my Beloved; you are My delight. I have known you forever and will guard you always. There is no power which can wrench you from My hand. I am meat and drink to you, and fine gold. I will purchase all your calamities, your pains, sorrows and despairs, and I will turn them into dancing. You are Mine, yes, and I am yours. After all this time, we are one."

... Let the dance begin.

In memory of Alison Virgin. We miss you. For you the storm is over and the dance will never end.
