Tree of Life 05:15
The good Lord bore the whole world upon His back And took up His cross up that hill Where He lay hold the cup of the Father’s wrath And drained the contents without spill Please, come meet thy God Let His peace rule in your hearts You know the grace of our Lord that though he was rich Yet for our sake’s He became poor That we through His poverty might be rich That for His name’s sake there shall be one fold Please, come meet my God Let His peace rule in your hard hearts As many were astounded at Thee His visage was so marred, more than any man Yet He thought it not robbery to be equal with God He shed the blood of God He shed the blood of God on the tree of life “Please remember me, my Lord,” and He replied “This day you shall be with Me in paradise.” And having made peace through the blood of His tree The truth shall make you free, and ye shall be free indeed Please, come meet my God Let His peace rule in your hard hearts On the tree of life Where my hope begins Because He lives He lives.

King of the universe Lord of heaven and earth Creator of the cosmos Saviour of the world King of the universe. The heavens declare Your glory And the firmament showeth Your handiwork The Master’s hand of the genius Still to unveil His masterpiece King of the universe. He’s the image of the invisible God The firstborn over all creation By Him, and through Him And for Him were all things created He is the head of the body And the firstborn from among the dead That in all things He may have preeminence King of the universe. Reign, reign, reign over me King of the universe. In the beginning was the Word And the Word was with God And the Word was God In Him was life And the life was the light of men The light shines in the darkness The darkness can’t comprehend King of the universe. Lifted up high Crucified as a criminal Abandoned by His friends Surrounded by His enemies He suffered for our sin Yet did not plead His innocence But we say, “If You are who You say You are "Come down so we may believe "Come down so we may believe King of the Jews.” Reign, reign, reign over me Reign, reign, reign over me King of the universe. King of the universe Lord of heaven and earth Creator of the cosmos Saviour of the world.

Give me Your heart, I will give You mine (Give me Your heart, I will give You mine) Give me Your heart, I will give You mine (Give me Your heart, I will give You mine) I need You now more than ever I need You now more than ever I need You now more than ever O my Lord …

O my soul, why are you cast down? And why are you disquieted in me? My soul thirsts for the living God When will I appear before my King? O my God, my soul is cast down Deep calleth unto deep Yet at the sound of Thy waterfalls All Thy waves and billows are gone over me Yet the Lord will command His lovingkindness In the daytime and in the night His song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say, unto God my rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” My tears have been my food day and night As they say to me “Where is your king?” Yet as the deer pants after water brooks So pants my soul after Thee, after Thee Let not your heart be troubled My peace I give unto you Not as the world gives, and though I’ve gone away I’m coming back again for you Lord, I will sing, You are my King You are my everything And I am Your son, Lord, lead me on But don’t leave me down here too long Yet when I’m weak You are strong When I am weak You are strong in me. O my soul, why are you cast down? And why are you disquieted in me? O my God, my soul is cast down Deep calleth unto deep Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness In the daytime and in the night His song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life Unto the God of my life Unto the God of my life.

Father, I’m always thinking of myself I’m rarely really caring about anybody else As if the world revolved around me But now I’ve been exposed and I see my selfishness Self-righteousness, and my self-pity Please forgive me Lord, have mercy on me. Father, I’ve been thinking about Your Son In the garden when He prayed, “Not My will, but Thine be done.” And as the world rebels against Him Why do I care if I am hated for His name’s sake? The name above all names Lord Jesus Christ I want to rededicate my life to You I want to be renewed Live through me Manifest Yourself in me Give through me Shine Your light for all to see And make me die to myself You’re the only one who matters now Father, I’ve been thinking about Your Spirit He’s everywhere, He’s always here I call upon You now ‘Cause in this world that alienates me I see how much sin has polluted me Yet to greater degree I see O yes, I see Your tender mercy Your tender mercy 'Cause Jesus, You died for me Jesus, You died for me Jesus, You died for everybody.

Run Away 05:06
You’re running away From something that’s already found you It laughs in your face It wants to devour you The world loves its own But you never felt at home here So you go it alone But you know there’s no escape You can’t run away from what’s inside of you You can’t hide from the truth And the truth is you’re running away. I tell you the truth You’re a lost sheep among wolves And the Shepherd He’s calling your name And He knows His own And His own hear His voice He’s calling you home But He’s giving you the choice He simply won’t coerce or force you to be His friend Cause my Lord He’s a gentleman So today when you hear His voice Do not harden your heart He wants you for the kingdom If you mean business When you say you’re searching for God Then be through with man’s wisdom He stands knocking at the door of your heart In the bondage of your peers you don’t hear These end times are almost gone The war for souls rages on So today when you hear His voice Listen for a change Listen for a change Listen for a change One black day I found myself at the mercy of the powers that be The hounds of hell were poised to destroy me And I stood alone on the brink of the void And I stood accused and I didn’t have a case I knew I was to blame For the choices I’d made For refusing God’s grace Now there’ll be no escape I can’t run away, no …

I can hear them laughing at me Laughing at me for what I believe But I am not ashamed of my Jesus They laughed at Him long before They laughed at me Soon the truth will be seen So crystal clearly And the enemies of the cross Will be shown for who they are And I can hear them laughing at me Laughing at me for what I believe But I am not ashamed of my Jesus They laughed at Him long before They laughed at me Every secret thing shall soon Be brought into light Every lying tongue will be silenced And everyone brought to account And I can hear them laughing at me Laughing at me for what I believe But I am not ashamed of my Jesus They laughed at Him long before They laughed at me Yet you, my friend, who say you believe Why are you siding with the world? We cannot serve two masters We cannot sit on the fence Trying not to offend This ol’ world drowning in sorrow A world going to hell We cannot soft-sell the gospel, no … But I can see you’re offended by me Offended by me for what I have seen But you are really offended by Jesus And you hated Him long before you hated me So I’m not going to take it No, I’m not going to take it No, I’m not going to take it personally Personally ...

Blessed 05:05
Blessed are the poor in spirit For theirs is the kingdom of heaven And blessed are they who mourn For they shall be comforted You are the salt of the earth Full of grace, don’t lose the savour You are the light of the world A city set on a hill that cannot be hidden You cannot be hidden And blessed are the pure in heart For they shall see God And blessed are ye who are persecuted For righteousness’ sake Rejoice and be glad For great is your reward in heaven Let your light so shine before men That they may see your works and glorify God Your Father in heaven Who lights a lamp to hide under a bushel? Set it on a stand To shine forth upon this cold, dark land This land Blessed are the merciful For they shall obtain mercy And blessed are you who do hunger and thirst after righteousness You Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord You Hallelujah Do you know who you are? Do you know who you are? Do you know who you are? You’re a child of the King You’re a child of the King You’re a child of the King We are children of the King of kings.

I’ve been a masochist I’ve made so many mistakes I’ve wasted my substance on riotous living I have played a lot of games Yet His forgiveness is pulsing through my veins In whom I live and move and have my being Father, I’ve been so dirty You are so clean Yet You have robed me with Your righteousness Now I am redeemed I need to be clothed with humility Anxious for nothing Don’t want to be wise in my own eyes Must realize I’m like a newborn baby Cause I was once so grown-up Too much for my own good To gain the world but lose my soul I thank Christ for the cross and the blood Father, I’ve been so dirty You are so clean And You have robed me with Your righteousness Now I am redeemed So welcome, My long-lost son Climb up into your Daddy’s lap Your days of wanderlust are done He has killed for you the fatted calf Hey everybody, you’re all invited Hey everybody, you’re all welcome Come as a little child Ye who are weary and burdened Cause He’s preparing a banquet feast For His long-lost children Come as a little child Ye who are weary and burdened Cause He’s prepared a banquet feast For His long-lost children He’s preparing a banquet feast For His beloved children …

I love you more than words can tell And I have died for men going through hell Going to hell Greater love hath no man than this That a man lay down his life for his friends And you are My friend For now and forever, amen. I’m by your side through hellfire, and sorrow, and pain And I hear your every cry, overtures of hearts broken Such is shame But don’t be ashamed Greater am I who is in you than he that is in this world And lo, I am with you always Even to the end of the world Even to the end of the world Even to the end of the world The end of the world. I love you and if only you loved Me true We could share in the joy, in the peace of My prayer You’re My prayer Greater love hath no man than this That a man lay down his life for his friends Friends Friends And you are My friend For now and forever Now and forever Now and forever Amen.

about

2003 seanosongs
Remastered May-June 2020, The Cave, Vancouver, BC
Cover art: "Lazare," Jean-Paul Lemieux (Canadian) 1941

"Tree of Life" was recorded in Kitchener and Toronto over a three-month span in the summer of 2002. It showcases the anointed musicality of friends Dan, Matthew, Brian and Linda. We were a band of sorts for a season!

The back story to most of these songs relates to a period of intense spiritual struggle in the mid-late 1980s as a young disciple of Jesus, at the tail-end of an era that is historically remembered as The Jesus Movement. (The death of Keith Green in 1982 demarcates its transition from ministry-minded musicians serving the flock to contemporary Christian music as a lucrative and burgeoning enterprise.)

I like to believe that this album carries some of the authenticity of an era when Jesus determined to take up with some pretty shattered souls, misfits and outcasts, to befriend and heal them, to lead them to the tree whose leaves are for the healing of the nations, that ancient tree we shall now at last eat of, and the tree upon which whoever hangs is accursed, all enjoined at the paradoxically hideous and glorious cross of Golgotha, the tree of life.
